 Abstract:  The 1928 race of the National Air Races was held in Los Angeles, California, but from 1929 to 1939 most of the races were held in Cleveland, Ohio. They featured cross country races, short races, army and navy maneuvers, stunt flying, parachute jumping, gliders, dirigibles, balloons and model planes and were considered a working laboratory for the aviation industry where new developments could be tested and refined. The collection consists of individual portraits, group portraits, and views pertaining to the National Air Races, National Aircraft Shows, and Thompson Trophy Races. Individuals pictured include Clifford W. Henderson, Jimmy Doolittle, Pancho Barnes, Amelia Earhart, Roscoe Turner, Mary Pickford, Alexander de Seversky, Jacqueline Cochran, Frederick C. Crawford, and Bill Odom. Included are views of the 1949 crash site and debris.

The collection consists of photographs documenting the life, family, and career of Cleveland, Ohio, newspaper editor Paul Bellamy.  Abstract:  TRW, Inc. was established in 1900, in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Cleveland Cap Screw Company. It began producing automotive parts and underwent several reorganizations, becoming the Electric Welding Products Company (1908), the Steel Products Company (1915), and Thompson Products Inc. (1926). It expanded to include branch plants and the production of aircraft parts, and fostered a company union, the Automotive and Aircraft Workers Alliance (later the Aircraft Workers Alliance). It grew during World War II due to defense contracts. After the war it entered the jet and aerospace industries. It merged in 1958 with Ramo Wooldridge Corporation to become TRW Inc. Outside activities include the National Air Races and the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of photographs that relate primarily to TRW's predecessor company, Thompson Products, but views from Ramo Wooldridge and TRW are also included. Consists of individual and group portraits of company personnel and management, and views of interior and exterior plant buildings in Cleveland and Euclid, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Bell, California; St. Louis, Missouri; and St. Catharines, Ontario. Product photographs include automotive valves, pistons, generators, fuel pumps, jet engine parts, and electronic and industrial equipment. Product ads include company logos, advertisements for trade shows, parts stores and machine shops; as well as individual products and displays of manuals and catalogs. Portraits of management figures include Frederick C. Crawford, Tom O. Duggan, and J. L. Coolidge, and photographs of workers in both work and social settings are also included.

 Abstract:  Troop A was founded in 1877 in Cleveland, Ohio, as an independent military unit to defend against strikers and unruly mobs. It affiliated with the Ohio National Guard in 1877, formed part of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry in 1898, was absorbed into the 135th Field Artillery in 1918, and reorganized in 1920 as Troop A of the 107th Cavalry Regiment of the Ohio National Guard. It became part of the 107th Armored Cavalry Regiment in 1947. The Cleveland Gatling Gun Battery was also founded in 1877 to quell labor violence. It disbanded by 1905. The collection consists of photographs of Troop A, of Cleveland, Ohio, and the 135th Field Artillery. One album contains photographs of Troop A training in August 1912 at Novelty, Ohio. Another album depicts members of Troop A patrolling the Mexican border during 1916 and of the 135th Field Artillery during World War I. Loose photographs contain group portraits and other images which chronicle the 135th Field Artillery during World War I. There are also photographs of Field Marshal Foch's visit to Cleveland in November 1921 and a Troop A 85th anniversary event in 1962.

 Abstract:  The League of Women Voters was formed in 1920 in Cleveland, Ohio, by former suffragists and members of the Woman's Suffrage Party. The League is nonpartisan and has endorsed various legislation, including laws to protect female workers and improve child welfare and education. Its efforts include voter registration drives, assistance to election boards, demonstrations of registration and voting techniques, as well as sponsoring candidates debates. The collection consists of photographs of members and activities engaged in or sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Cleveland. Included in the photographs is a group portrait in front of the Woman Suffrage Headquarters, ca. 1912, that includes Belle Sherwin and Florence Allen. Other photographs are of the October 3, 1914, Ohio Women's Suffrage Parade in Cleveland, Ohio. Pictured are Mrs. George F. Forest, the Men's League for Equal Suffrage, the Progressive Party float, and the Ohio County Committees for Women's Suffrage. Photographs of League displays and buildings include views of the National League of Women Voters building, a straw vote display, and various voter registration displays. Group portraits, taken at League activities, include Carl Stokes, Mary Jayne Willis, Anthony Celebrezze, Robert Montgomery, Mrs. John C.  Abstract:  The Historic American Buildings Survey was a national survey to record and catalog historic buildings. It began in 1934 as a federal make-work project to provide work for unemployed architects, draftsmen and photographers. It was initially funded and supervised by the Civil Works Administration and later supervised by the National Park Service, the American Institute of Architecture and the Library of Congress, with a combination of private and Works Progress Administration (WPA) funds. William A. Bohnard was the first Northern Ohio District Officer. The collection consists of photographs of historic buildings in northern Ohio taken under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration during the late 1930s. In most cases, the photographs are mounted in small pamphlets giving historical and structural information concerning the building. Historic buildings in the following northern Ohio communities are included: Akron, Ashland, Atwater, Aurora, Avon, Bath, Bentleyville, Brecksville, Bristolville, Burton, Chagrin Falls, Claridon, Cleveland, Colebrook, Copley, Deerfield, Dover, Findley, Fremont, Gates Mills, Hudson, Huntington, Ira, Jefferson, Kinsman, Kirtland, Lakewood, Limaville, McCuthonville, Mentor, Milan, Monroeville, Mt.  Abstract:  Orrel A. Parker (1873-1965) was the President of the Parker Wheel Company in Cleveland, Ohio, who also served as an Aeronautical Mechanical Engineer in charge of technical records for the Air Service during World War I. He was largely responsible for the War Department's investigation of irregularities between the Lubrication Department and the Air Division of the Signal Corps. The collection consists of photographs (including tintypes and cabinet cards) and negatives of portraits of Orrel Parker and his family, and views of his residences and businesses. Also included are views and lantern slides made by Parker of the installation of the United States government in Puerto Rico and of an execution by garroting in Puerto Rico.

 Abstract:  Benedict Crowell (1869-1952) was a Cleveland, Ohio, engineer, builder and bank president who became Assistant Secretary of War and Director of Munitions during World War I. The collection consists of photographs depicting the life and career of General Benedict Crowell, including his service during World War I, and portraits of Woodrow Wilson and Herbert Hoover, dedication of various European monuments after the war, scenes in Paris, views of France, Holland, Belgium, Italy, and Germany, and photographs and a pamphlet from the Naval Rigid Airship Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey.

 Abstract:  The Consumers League of Ohio is a political action organization concerned with the welfare of the laboring class. It lobbies for legislation in their interests. Men were admitted in 1921. the collection consists of photographs relating to personnel and investigative activities of the Consumers League of Ohio. Included are photographs of child workers, displays, the Governor's Committee on Migrant Labor, and portraits.

Included are images of the Irish Children's Fund participation in Saint Patrick's Day parades, a view of the company's premises, several photos of Catholic and Protestant children interacting with one another, and social events, retreats and fundraising activities of the group in both the United States and Northern Ireland.

 Abstract:  Henry Lee Moon (1901-1985) was public relations director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) at its New York headquarters (1948-1960). Mollie Lewis Moon, his wife, was a social worker, public relations executive, founder and chairman of the National Urban League Guild (1942-1962), and trustee and secretary of the National Urban League (1955-1962). Roddy K. Moon (1868-1952) was an organizer of the Cleveland chapter of the NAACP. The collection consists of group and individual and group portraits of Henry Lee Moon, his family, friends and associates.

 Abstract:  Lowell O. Mellen (1897-1993) was a business consultant in Cleveland, Ohio, who pioneered the training techniques of Training Within Industry (TWI) as a representative of the War Manpower Commission in the Northern District of Ohio during World War II. After the war, he was recruited by General Douglas MacArthur to train supervisors and workers in Japan in the techniques of Training Within Industry in order to quickly stabilize the Japanese economy by making its industrial base more efficient. Mellen's company, Training Within Industry, Inc., trained over one million supervisors and workers in Japan. Mellen's training programs in job instruction, job methods, job relations, problem solving, and job safety are credited as the foundation for industrial programs that stress continuous improvement and lean management. The collection consists of 121 black and white photographs and one 16mm black and white motion picture film.

 Abstract:  Zenas Ball moved from New Jersey to a farm in Knox County, Ohio in 1819. His son Aaron was the father of Webb C. and F. Grant Ball. Webb C. was the owner of the Webb. C. Ball Co. and the Ball Time Inspection Service. F. Grant was a jeweler, violin maker and family historian of the Ball International Union. The collection consists of five albums and unmounted photographs of the Ball family. Included are views of the Ball Farm, the Zenas Ball Homestead, and various groups of individuals at these locations. Also included are engraving plates of Webb C. Ball and Sidney Ball.
